چکیده

Distributed software component architectures provide a promising approach to the problem of building large scale, scientiic Grid applications 8]. Communication in these component architectures is based on Remote Method Invocation (RMI) protocols that allow one software component to invoke the functionality of another. Examples include Java remote method invocation (Java-RMI))3] and the new Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) 6]. SOAP has the advantage of being supportable by many programming languages and component frameworks. This paper describes experiments showing that SOAP by itself is not eecient enough for large scale scientiic applications. However, when it is embedded in a multi-protocol RMI framework, SOAP can be eeectively used as a universal control protocol, that can be swapped out by faster, more special purpose protocols when large data transfer speeds are needed.

A Case for Virtual Distributed Objects

There are two emerging trends in distributed computing. The rst trend is evolving because programming high performance client-server applications is a challenge. Client-server archi-tectures must be designed from the ground up for good performance. Increasingly, we are seeing client-server models evolving away from traditional client-server structures into new structures such as three-tier syst...

Java 2 Remote Method Invocation Performance Analysis, Comparison and Optimization for RMI, RMI-IIOP, and IDL

Java and distributed object models are important for building modern, scalable, interoperable applications. This paper is focused on the performance analysis, comparison and optimization of the three most important distributed object models for Java: RMI (Remote Method Invocation), RMI-IIOP beta (Remote Method Invocation over Internet Inter-ORB Protocol), and IDL (Interface Definition Language)...

Java RMI Performance and Object Model Interoperability: Experiments with Java/HPC++ Distributed Components

Java RMI provides an elegant and powerful model for invoking member functions on objects that exist in remote address spaces. Unfortunately, it is a Java-to-Java communication model and many of the objects we would like java to interact with may be scientiic application written in C++ or Fortran. This paper explores the design of RMI and extracts a subset of the RMI object model that is compati...
